Developing Photonuclear Experimental Capabilities for Nuclear Science and Security

Robert Casperson | 18-ERD-013

Executive Summary

We are developing an experimental capability to measure the photo-induced nuclear reactions generated by gamma-ray beams interacting with heavy metal nuclei using a newly installed electron accelerator at Lawrence Livermore. These measurements should provide a unique diagnostic for special nuclear material detection for nonproliferation and stockpile stewardship, as well as enable advances in nuclear astrophysics.
