Predictive Ternary Reactions for Stellar Nucleosynthesis

Executive Summary

We will establish an ab initio capability to accurately predict ternary nuclear reaction rates that are currently beyond the reach of experiments and theoretical calculations, a capability that will enable the accurate evaluation of the ternary reaction leading to the formation of berylium-9 in neutron-rich explosive astrophysical environments. These results will reduce uncertainty in the predicted abundances of heavy elements, and be an indispensable tool for reaction studies in areas such as nuclear astrophysics, science at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, and national security.
