We explored the use of colloidal suspensions for dip coating thick layers of silicate glass to produce optical fiber preforms with varied compositions. Specifically, we sought to determine whether coatings of sufficient thickness can be made to produce large volumes of doped glass and whether these coatings can be melted to full density during fiber draw without the formation of gas bubbles. Both questions were addressed, and glasses containing Germanium (Ge) and Neodymium (Nd) were prepared.
