High-Flux Electrochemical Synthesis of Ammonia in Ionic Liquid FY20

Maira Ceron Hernandez | 20-FS-022

Executive Summary

We seek to demonstrate the feasibility of using the nitrogen reduction reaction to nitride ions for a high-throughput electrochemical synthesis of ammonia at intermediate temperatures (less than 300 degrees Celsius). This research supports the Department of Energy's energy goals by exploring a modular, distributed, carbon-neutral ammonia production process that could eliminate a major industrial source of carbon, leading to significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
