Understanding Angular Momentum in Nuclear Fission

Aaron Gallant | 20-LW-045

Executive Summary

We will determine the mechanism that causes angular momentum in fission products by employing a recently developed direct ion-counting technique to measure isomeric yield ratios and comparing the results to predictions based on first-principles theory. An improved understanding of fission is important for nuclear security, stockpile stewardship, and fundamental science.
