Exploring the Cosmos: Enabling One Thousand Times More Sensitive Spectrographs for Exoplanet Search

Executive Summary
We will experimentally demonstrate a technique to stabilize an optical dispersive spectrograph against unwanted wavelength drifts by adding an interferometer to its input beam and processing the spectral data using a novel technique known as crossfading externally dispersed interferometry, which is expected to increase spectrograph stability by up to one thousand times. Since uncontrolled wavelength drifts are often the major limitation of a spectrograph's precision, this technique will increase the Doppler velocity precision for characterizing Earthlike exoplanets, while also increasing the robustness and accuracy of airborne or spaceborne spectrographs.
