Foundational Advances in Refractive Index Control for Optical Fibers

Executive Summary

We aim to quantify the factors that affect the refractive indices of optical fibers at levels that are two orders of magnitude better than existing capabilities, and determine how to effectively control these factors during fabrication. The ability to make optical fibers with these capabilities will support research at high-energy laser facilities, open new telecommunications bands, and drive future particle accelerators.
