Laser-Induced Desorption and Redeposition in Fused Silica

Christopher Carr | 23-ERD-008

Executive Summary

We will determine under what conditions a previously observed laser-fatigue effect, hypothesized to result from Laser-Induced Desorption of Precursors, reduces the damage resistance of silicon dioxide optics used on ultraviolet nanosecond-pulsed laser systems, work to establish the physical mechanisms underlying this effect, and identify viable options for mitigation. This work will enable more economical operation of high-fluence systems, such as National Ignition Facility, when operated above 1.8 megajoules.
