Breakdown of the Magic Numbers: Unparalleled Opportunities at the New Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

Brenden Longfellow | 23-LW-047

Executive Summary

We will probe the breakdown of magic numbers for neutron-rich nuclei by performimg gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments on Silicon-42 and Chromium 62. This work will be conducted at the world-leading Facility for Rare Isotope Beams using the state-of-the-art Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array and will greatly enhance our predictive power for neutron-rich nuclei leading to an improved understanding of the underlying nuclear forces.
